Streets Update
Road crews were out all day yesterday plowing priority routes and maintaining passable conditions on Columbia's primary roads. Crews are using a salt and cinder mix for added traction in some areas to improve safety for customers.
Response to the snow event has been a citywide effort. Crews from Parks and Recreation, Water and Light, Parking Utilities, Sewer Utilities and Solid Waste pitched in to help plow streets. Contracted hauling services were also brought in to remove snow from the central business district.
Several crews moved into residential neighborhoods overnight, utilizing smaller equipment, backhoes and pickups to plow residential streets. This helped keep larger snow plow trucks on priority routes. Today’s efforts will focus on clearing trash collection routes, starting with Tuesday collection routes, and then moving on to Wednesday, and so on. Thanks to cross-departmental efforts, crews will also be able to make some early progress in northeast Columbia, using backhoes that Water and Light has available in that area.
Solid Waste Updates
TRASH/GARBAGE - Tuesday and Wednesday residential routes will be delayed until Thursday. We anticipate collection will be be delayed by one day the rest of the week. If we don't make it through all of Wednesday's routes by the end of the day Thursday, we will resume first thing Friday morning before moving on to Thursday's routes.
Customers are asked to place their trash in a visible and easily accessible area free of snow and ice, if possible, and away from areas that could have snow dumped on it from road plows.
RECYCLING - residential curbside collection of recyclables is cancelled the rest of the week. Please hold your recyclables until your collection day next week or take them to the drop-offs once you can safely do so.
LANDFILL - The landfill plans to be open Wednesday from 10 a.m.- 4p.m.
Parking
The ban on parking on snow routes is still in effect. Customers will be notified when cars can be moved back to priority routes online, on social media, press releases and by the subscribed NIXLE alert system.
