Snow Operations Update - Thursday, February 6, 9:30am

COLUMBIA, MO (February 6, 2014) - The City made great progress plowing roads after a winter storm dumped over 8" of snow on Columbia Tuesday and Wednesday, reporting that 98% of roadways were passable this morning only 27 hours after the snow stopped falling. Crews were prepared and plows hit the streets immediately when snow first started falling. Working around the clock on priority routes first, and crews then moved into neighborhoods with a special focus on trash collection routes that had fallen behind schedule due to the winter weather.

Trash collection resumed today starting with Tuesday's collection routes and moving into Wednesday's collection routes as well to try to get back on schedule. If crews can't reach all of Wednesday's collections by end of the day, they will pick up first thing on Friday morning and continue the rest of the collection routes about one day delayed for the rest of the week. Customers are asked to place trash bags in a location that is clearly visible and easily accessible to crews.

The City thanks customers for their help in the snow removal process by moving their cars off of priority routes to make room for plows to come through as quickly and efficiently as possible. JohnGlascock, Director of Public Works says "Residents obviously want their streets cleared as quickly as possible after a major snow event like this, and they want to help in anyway they can. It makes a big difference for the crews when cars aren't blocking the roadways and plows can move through neighborhoods easily and move on to the next one just that much quicker."

Customers that violated the City's new no-parking ordinance and may have gotten their car towed can call the Columbia Police Department at their non-emergency number (874-7652) and press zero to speak with the operator and find out where their car was towed.
