City reminds residents about sidewalk snow removal
COLUMBIA, MO (January 2, 2014) - Now that winter is in full swing, the City’s Office of Neighborhood Services wants to remind residents about the need to keep sidewalks clear of snow and ice. Keeping sidewalks clear is important for those walking to school or work, walking a dog or making deliveries.
City ordinance 24-12 requires people to keep sidewalks in front of, or adjacent to, the property or premises owned or occupied by them or under their control free from snow and ice.
Residents are encouraged to be prepared to remove ice and snow from their sidewalks by having a shovel and salt available or arranging for someone else to assist with snow and ice removal. Neighbors are encouraged to assist elderly or disabled residents as they can. The City’s Office of Neighborhood Services has a limited number of snow shovels available to loan to residents and neighborhoods.
“Voluntary compliance is the best solution to keeping our sidewalks clear,” said Tim Teddy, director of Community Development. “We appreciate the work of our residents to keep our city pedestrian-friendly even in the winter months.”
The City’s Office of Neighborhood Services is working on outreach to neighborhoods and Columbia residents on this issue and can be reached at (573) 817-5050.
