Fire Damages Apartment on Claudell Lane
COLUMBIA, MO (January 28, 2014) - On Monday, January 27, 2014 at 2:40pm the Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to a commercial structure fire at 1006 Claudell Lane, Columbia Square Apartments, apartment 106. The caller stated there was fire in a kitchen appliance.
Fire crews arrived less than five minutes later and observed heavy smoke coming from the front and back of apartment 106. Moments later flashover, the simulteaneous ignition of directly exposed combustible material, occured sending flames through both sides of the apartment.
Fire crews performed an aggressive fire attack and held the fire to apartment 106 with only minor damage to the adjacent apartment. Crews had the fire under control in approximately ten minutes.
One adult and one child were home at the time of the event. The adult was made aware of the fire by smoke detectors. Both made it out safely. One member of the Columbia Fire Department was transported to University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Investigator, Assistant Fire Marshal James Pasley, determined the cause of the fire to be unattended cooking. The damage estimate is $65,000.
One ladder truck, three engines and a rescue squad responded to this event.
Columbia Fire Department wants to remind citizens that working smoke alarms save lives. Test your smoke alarms once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every ten years. To ensure adequate protection place smoke alarms in every sleeping room and in a common are on every floor.
