Parks and Recreation Celebrates Black History Month
COLUMBIA, MO (January 28, 2014) - February is Black History Month and the City of Columbia’s Parks & Recreation Department is providing five free programs this year:
“Host the History”
Weekdays, February 1st - 28th
Organizations, schools, and agencies in Columbia are invited to schedule and host a presentation at your location weekdays in February for free. Great facts about the history of Columbia's African American community will be shared.
African American Culture in Film & Discussion
Thursday, February 6, 7 p.m.
Armory Sports & Community Center - Conference Room - 701 E. Ash St.
"The March: The Story of the Greatest March in American History"
Join us to view this movie & join in on a short discussion about it afterwards; and how the events have affected our country.
Annual Panel Discussion
Tuesday, February 18, 7 p.m.
Armory Sports & Community Center - Conference Room - 701 E. Ash St.
Join our diverse panel in some lively discussion and dialogue about historic events, current events, politics and actions that affect the African American Community. This year's topic is "The National Health Plan: Will it Work or Fail?" Bring your ears & your opinions!
Talent “Blow Out”
Thursday, February 13, 7 p.m.
Douglass High School Gymnasium - 310 N. Providence Rd.
Dancers, singers, rappers, poets and more will share their talent to keep you entertained. Special guest Nick "Danger" Rodriguez will be on hand to entertain along with the Boys & Girls Club Dance Troupe. Give us a call if you would like to be part of the show!
Gospel Explosion & Soul Food Dinner Musical Celebration
Sunday, February 23, 3 p.m.
St. Luke UMC - 204 E. Ash St.
Great gospel music! This year's program will feature local choirs, soloists and groups from Central Missouri. Afterwards, there will be a soul food feast for all that attend to feed your spirit.
All programs are free and open to the public. Call the Armory Sports Center at 817-5077 for more information.
