Basement Fire Damages Apartment Building

COLUMBIA, MO (July 17, 2014) - At 3:13 p.m. Thursday, July 17, 2014, the Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported residential structure fire at 1121 Ashland Road, the Manor Apartments. The 9-1-1 caller reported smoke in the building.

Columbia Firefighters arrived at 3:16 p.m. to find heavy, black smoke in the basement of the two-story, seven-unit apartment building. Firefighters entered the basement and located the fire in a small laundry and utility room. Using a single hose-line, crews quickly extinguished the fire. Crews had to ventilate the thick smoke from the basement of the building to determine if the fire had spread to any of the adjoining rooms. “Fortunately, firefighters were able to contain the fire to the room of origin” said Fire Battalion Chief Kyle Fansler.  The remainder of the basement, which was primarily a storage area, sustained significant smoke damage. There was minor smoke damage to the first and second floor apartments.

There were no injuries and a cause of the fire has not been determined. The Columbia Fire Marshal’s Office was on the scene investigating. There were several pets in various apartments at the time of the fire but none were believed to have been harmed. As occupants returned home they were allowed to remove their pets from the building. A dollar damage estimate has not yet been determined.

Three engines, a ladder, and a rescue squad responded to the incident. Crews were on scene for approximately two hours.
