South-Side Home Heavily Damaged by Fire

COLUMBIA, MO (July 20, 2014) - At 3:27 a.m. on Sunday, July 20th, 2014 the Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported residential structure fire in the 2400 block of Carter Lane in south Columbia. Several 9-1-1 callers reported a house and several cars on fire. 

Firefighters arrived at 3:32 a.m. to find the single-story, approximately 1000 sq. foot, home at 2417 S. Carter Lane heavily involved in fire. Crews encountered flames coming from the windows, roof, and south gable end of the home. There were also three passenger cars on fire in the front yard. With cars in the driveway and the early hour, firefighters entered the house to search for occupants and control the fire. Firefighters found the house to be unoccupied and worked to extinguish both the house and car fires. It took approximately twenty minutes to bring the blaze under control.

The home sustained significant fire damage and is uninhabitable. A preliminary damage estimate is set at $65,000. It is not known if the home was insured. Columbia Assistant Fire Marshal Brian Davison is investigating the fire. At the time of this release, the origin and cause has not been determined and remains under investigation.

Sixteen firefighters, three fire engines, a ladder truck, and a rescue squad responded to the blaze. Crews remained on the scene for approximately three hours.
