Firefighters Rescue Man Pinned in Mobile Home by Downed Tree

COLUMBIA, MO (June 4, 2014) - At 4:33 a.m. Wednesday, June 04, 2014 the Columbia Fire Department and the Boone County Fire District responded to a report of a tree down on a mobile home with an occupant trapped at 4150 Lenoir Street, Ed's Mobile Home Park. Firefighters arrived on the scene at Lot 8 to find a large tree and power lines down across the rear of a single-wide mobile home. The north end of the mobile home, where the victim was trapped, was crushed to a height of approximately three feet.

Firefighters accessed the victim in the rear bedroom to find him pinned between the bed and the ceiling of the mobile home. The victim was pinned from his waist down by the debris. Using saws, pry bars, and hydraulic rescue tools, firefighters cut and removed parts of the damaged home from around the victim. Because of the difficult and lengthy rescue process, paramedics initiated medical care to the patient during his entrapment. Once sufficient space was created, the victim, who remained conscious throughout the ordeal, was able to assist in his own rescue, and firefighters were able to remove him to a waiting ambulance.  

The victim was transported to University Hospital with potentially serious injuries. An adult female occupant of the mobile home was able to exit the home prior to the Fire Department’s arrival. She was not seriously injured and was taken by a neighbor to a local hospital for evaluation.

The rescue took approximately one hour to complete. “This was a challenging rescue not only because of the severe weather conditions at the time, but also because of the downed power lines and tight working conditions in the collapse area,” Battalion Chief John Metz said. “This was a team effort between Columbia and Boone County Firefighters working together in bad conditions to effect this rescue” Metz said.

Five units responded to the incident. Between 4:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. today, Columbia Fire and Boone County Fire units responded to approximately thirty emergency calls, many of them storm related.
