UPDATE - Columbia Public Works and Columbia Police to conduct tests to determine effectiveness of temporary traffic control measures related to the Scott Blvd closure

COLUMBIA, MO (March 17, 2014) - Map attached to show potential u-turn location for southbound Forum traffic attempting to turn into the MAC during the right in/right out restrictions. No changes to the text release. 

Since the March 3 closure of Scott Blvd between Bellview Drive and Vawter School Road, Columbia Public Works traffic engineers have been closely and carefully monitoring traffic flows on alternate routes. During this time, signal timing has been adjusted at several intersections including Nifong at Forum, Chapel Hill at Forum, Stadium at Forum, and Route K at Providence Road.

On Wednesday, March 19 and Thursday, March 20, Columbia Public Works will create a right in - right out at the entrance to the Missouri Athletic Center on Forum just south of the MKT trail entrance between the hours of 4:00 and 6:00 PM. This will allow evaluation of traffic flow when restricting left turns during evening peak travel times.

On the same dates and times, Columbia Police will control traffic at Chapel Hill and Limerick and Chapel Hill and Fairview. These two intersections are controlled by four-way stops.

During the week of spring break, traffic engineers will evaluate traffic flows on Forum and Chapel Hill while Columbia Public Schools, some private schools, and local colleges and universities are not in session.

The data collected from both tests will be evaluated to determine if additional traffic control measures should be implemented to assist with traffic flows during peak travel times during the Scott Blvd closure and if so, when.

It also appears that capacity on Route K is underutilized during peak traffic times. Additional motorist may benefit by taking Scott Blvd south to Route K and then travelling east to Providence Road and then north. This could reduce traffic flows on Nifong Blvd, Forum Blvd, and Chapel Hill during peak traffic hours.

Columbia Public Works will communicate the findings of the tests and any additional action we may implement as the result of these test.

We continue to appreciate our customer's patience while we work to complete the Scott Blvd roadwork as quickly as possible. The contractor clearly understands the importance of opening Scott Blvd to two-way traffic by August.
