Cleanup Columbia will be Saturday, April 12

COLUMBIA, MO (March 20, 2014) - The eighteenth annual Cleanup Columbia, a city-wide trash pickup event organized by the City of Columbia’s Volunteer Programs, will be held the morning of Saturday, April 12.  Already more than 500 volunteers from 45 groups have registered to participate in the event.

Volunteers will be along Columbia streets and trails, in our streams and in our parks on April 12 picking up litter. There will also be volunteers working to remove graffiti from public property in central Columbia. Each group or individual participating selects their own time the morning of the event to conduct their trash pickup.

The City is also partnering with the Central Missouri Community Action (CMCA) on a project called “Love Where You Live - Columbia” to assist with properties in need of attention.  Volunteers will be working with CMCA on special projects on April 12.

Following trash pickup, volunteers are invited to a picnic lunch at noon at Twin Lakes Recreation Area sponsored by APAC-Missouri, Inc. to celebrate their efforts.

The City’s Volunteer Programs invites the public to participate in the event as there are still several locations that are unassigned.  Residents may register online at www.GoColumbiaMo.com or by calling 874-7499.  The City provides bags and gloves for volunteers and will pick up the filled trash bags. The City is also asking residents to report locations that are in special need of trash pickup.

Cleanup Columbia is sponsored by APAC-Missouri, Inc., 102.3 BXR, KFRU AM 1400, KOMU TV 8, the Mid-Missouri CW, the Columbia Daily Tribune, CenturyLink and Sonshine Graphics.  Columbia Public Works, Columbia Parks & Recreation and the Golden K Kiwanis Club also provide in-kind support.
