Car Crashes into Office Building
COLUMBIA, MO (May 10, 2014) - At 7:47 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2014 the Columbia Fire Department responded to a report of a car into a building at 1905 West Ash Street, the Shelter Insurance Claims Office in west Columbia.
Columbia Firefighters arrived on the scene at 7:52 p.m. to find a black Jeep Cherokee crashed into the south side of the building. Firefighters provided emergency medical care to the driver, an adult male, who was the only occupant of the vehicle and requested additional units to assess the damage to the building.
The injured adult male driver was transported by ambulance to the University Hospital as a "Trauma Alert", indicating potentially serious injuries.
A representative from Columbia's Building and Site Development Department responded to evaluate the structural integrity of the damaged building. It was determined that, while there was significant cosmetic damage, the building was safe to occupy. No emergency shoring or bracing was required. Firefighters marked off the damaged area with barrier tape and the building was turned over to the property owner. A dollar damage estimate was not available.
A fire engine, ladder truck, rescue squad and the Columbia Fire Department's Technical Rescue Truck responded to the incident. Units were on the scene for just over an hour.
What caused the driver to leave the roadway and crash into the building is not known at this time. The Columbia Police Department had officers on the scene investigating the crash.
