OPEN  - Gans Creek Road between Ponderosa St and Discovery Parkway

COLUMBIA, MO (May 13, 2014) - Gans Creek Road is open to all traffic. 

Engineers believe the sinkhole which collapsed a portion of the road yesterday was formed due to Karst topography in the area. There were no buried utilities under the section which collapsed and it did not appear to be caused by stormwater running under the roadway. The sinkhole measured about 6 foot in diameter and about 8 feet deep.

Engineers advised our street maintenance division to fill most of the sinkhole with concrete, then about 2 feet of clean fill (rock) and top it off with a new layer of asphalt. The new asphalt will be a temporary patch and once we've evaluated that no additional fill is needed, we'll come back in the next 30-60 days and install a smoother permanent patch.
