Garage Fire Cause $215,000 Damage

COLUMBIA, MO (May 28, 2014) - At 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 the Columbia Fire Department and the Boone County Fire District responded to a residential structure fire at 3403 Beech Cove Court in southwest Columbia.  Several 9-1-1 callers reported smoke coming from the garage roof of the single-story home.

Responding firefighters could see heavy black smoke coming from the Spring Creek neighborhood and arrived at 8:22 p.m. to find the attached garage heavily involved in fire. Columbia firefighters quickly attacked the blaze with multiple hose lines in an attempt to keep the fire from spreading to the rest of the home. Within approximately twenty minutes, firefighters had the fire knocked down and contained to the garage portion of the house.  Fire gutted the three-car garage but did not spread to living portion of the home. Smoke permeated the rest of the approximately 4500 square foot home but did not appear to cause serious damage.  “Our first arriving crew did a great job of knocking the fire down as other firefighters arrived on the scene,” said Battalion Chief John Metz. “Their quick work prevented the fire from spreading throughout the home,” Metz said.

No one was home when the fire was discovered. Assistant Fire Marshal Kyle Edwards is investigating the fire but, at the time of this release, has not determined an origin and cause for the blaze. Damage to the home and contents is estimated at  $215,000. One firefighter was evaluated at the scene for possible dehydration but did not require medical care. There were no other injuries. The two adult occupants of the home will be spending the night with family.

Fire crews remained on the scene for more than three hours overhauling the fire damage and checking for any hidden embers. One Boone County fire engine, three Columbia fire engines, a ladder truck, and a rescue squad responded to the alarm.
