Dryer Fire Briefly Closes Laundromat

COLUMBIA, MO (November 12, 2014) - At 3:06 p.m. Wednesday, November 12th, 2014 the Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported commercial structure fire at 21 Conley Road, the Robinson's Cleaners and Laundromat. The 9-1-1 caller reported a fire in a clothes dryer.

Columbia Fire units arrived on the scene at 3:11 p.m. to find moderate smoke conditions in the strip-mall business. Firefighters confirmed the business was evacuated and located the fire in a commercial dryer near the rear of the laundromat. Prior to the Fire Department's arrival, a customer attempted to extinguish the fire with a portable fire extinguisher but was unsuccessful. Firefighters used a water extinguisher to complete the extinguishment.

The fire was contained to the inside of the commercial dryer. There was no fire or smoke damage to the remainder of the business. What caused the dryer to catch fire is unknown at this time. A dollar-loss amount cannot be determined until the dryer is evaluated for repair or replacement.

Three fire engines, a ladder truck, and a rescue squad responded to the incident. The business was closed for approximately forty-five minutes while crews were on scene.
