City of Columbia Launches Recycling Ambassadors Initiative

COLUMBIA, MO (November 18, 2014) - The City of Columbia Volunteer Program in cooperation with Public Works is starting a new Recycling Ambassadors volunteer program to encourage recycling and waste reduction.

Recycling Ambassadors will respond to questions about recycling and solid waste programs, distribute information to the public during festivals, and participate in education events. They will also be asked to promote recycling and waste reduction at their workplace, schools and organizations. Ambassadors are required to participate in training and will be asked to share a minimum of 12 hours per year.

Training will include communication techniques, local waste reduction and prevention topics, proper recycling techniques, and other waste disposal options such as e-waste and household hazardous waste. Field trips to the Material Recovery Facility, Landfill, Bioreactor, and Compost Facility will also be included.

Friendly volunteers with communication skills are needed for this program. The first training is scheduled for Tuesday, December 9, 6-8 p.m.  Contact Andrea Shelton at (573) 874-6271 or pw-volunteer at GoColumbiaMo.com  to register.
