Outdoor Warning Sirens Activated During Severe Weather

COLUMBIA, MO (October 1, 2014) - Boone County Public Safety Joint Communications activated the outdoor warning sirens across the county on Wednesday afternoon as a result of the National Weather Service issuing a tornado warning across southern Boone County.  While a wall cloud was spotted by a trained weather spotter south of Ashland, there were no reports of actual tornadoes or damage related to the storm.

PSJC and the Boone County Office of Emergency Management remind everyone that the current OEM policy calls for the activation of outdoor warning sirens across the county, no matter which portion of the county is affected by a tornado warning. While that policy continues to be under review, residents should remember that the outdoor sirens are not designed to be heard indoors. Residents are encouraged to purchase a NOAA Weather Radio for their homes and businesses, and tune to local media when severe weather threatens.

During severe weather, residents are asked to refrain from calling 9-1-1 during a storm unless a life-threatening emergency is actually occurring.  For all other storm related calls, contact local utilities or the Public Safety Joint Communication non-emergency line at (573) 442-6131.
