City will host a ‘Ban the Box’ interested parties meeting Thursday

COLUMBIA, MO (October 13, 2014) - The public is invited to learn about and comment on the Mayor’s Task Force on Community Violence’s proposed Ban the Box ordinance for the City of Columbia at an interested parties meeting scheduled for 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at City Hall, conference room 1A.

The ordinance would amend Chapter 12, Human Relations of the City Code of Ordinances, and require employers to remove questions about an applicant’s criminal history from job applications and not inquire about criminal history until after a conditional offer of employment. There are some exceptions for certain jobs and employers.

The Mayor’s Task Force on Community Violence has been discussing Ban the Box since February and the proposed ordinance is currently set for a second reading and vote during the Nov. 3 council meeting.
