Historic Trades Workshops to be held Thursday through Saturday, September 4-6

COLUMBIA, MO (September 3, 2014) - Who: The Historic Preservation Commission, owners of older properties, tradespeople and contractors.

What: An intensive boot-camp of hands-on trades taught by preservation expert Bob Yapp (bobyapp.com)

Where/When: See attached itinerary.

Media Visuals: 12 participants at each location participating in real preservation efforts on wood floors, exterior siding, and double-hung wood windows. Safety and proper techniques will be addressed.

*Flooring: Participants will learn every step of the process by actually repairing and restoring a hardwood, tongue and grooved strip floor. Instructor Bob Yapp has passively restored over 20,000 square feet of historic wood floors of every variety. This class is not about aggressively drum sanding wood floors so they look new. Much like fine antiques we want to keep the character defining features and patina of the flooring. You will learn how to patch bad areas so they don’t look patched, passively remove the damaged old finish, remove water and pet stains as well as how to apply a new finish. At the end of the seminar, participants will know from beginning to end, how to repair & passively restore any wooden, tongue & grooved strip floor.

*Paint It Right: Attendees will learn: how to safely remove paint; how to scrape properly; how to clean the surfaces; how to pick the right paints, how to apply primer, caulking and finished top coats. Participants will also learn the ins and outs of interior painting and finishes.

*Windows: Students will learn cost-effective, energy efficient rehab of original, double-hung, wood windows. The workshop will also cover safe lead paint & glass removal, epoxy repair, glazing putty application, weather-stripping & sash re-installation. At the end of the day students will know the basics on how to repair & restore a historic wood, double-hung window.

Note: All sessions are full and closed to registrations.
