City’s annual commemorative poster unveiled

COLUMBIA, MO (September 5, 2014) - If you are from Columbia, there is a good chance you have enjoyed sitting by the Missouri River to enjoy live music and delicious local food at Cooper’s Landing; maybe you have even biked there on the MKT Trail. For this reason, it seems fitting that the fiber artwork titled “Cooper’s Landing” by Deb Roberts was selected for this year’s commemorative poster for the City of Columbia. Unveiled on Thursday, the work was selected from 87 images submitted by 17 mid-Missouri artists through a jury process.

A native Missourian and Columbia resident, Deb Roberts studied art at Central College in Pella, Iowa; Missouri Western College in St. Joseph, Mo.; and the Kansas City Art Institute in Kansas City, Mo. Roberts has worked as a photographer and graphic designer, and currently devotes her free time to creating artwork.

The iconic Cooper’s Landing on the Missouri River was the setting that inspired the quilt. “My husband and I find ourselves at Cooper’s Landing often to walk, hear music, eat a meal, listen to the sounds of the Missouri River or just hang out and watch the sun set,” says Roberts.

Roberts describes her story quilts as colorful, playful fiber collages composed of fabric scraps, scanned photos printed on fabric, beads, buttons and found objects. “Using both machine and hand stitching in a variety of threads my work is quilted, embroidered and embellished,” says Roberts. Her story quilts are currently displayed and sold at Bluestem.

The commemorative poster was unveiled Thursday at the new East Tower Columns Lounge of Memorial Stadium/Faurot Field. MU Athletic Director Mike Alden and his wife, Rockie, hosted this year’s Poster Party for the Arts. Funds raised by the event go toward the Columbia Arts Fund, an arts endowment fund established at the Community Foundation of Central Missouri intended to augment annual funding to arts and culture organizations.

The 2014 Columbia commemorative poster, “Cooper’s Landing,” can be purchased at Deck the Walls in the Columbia Mall or at the city’s Office of Cultural Affairs, 300 S. Providence Road. The city’s commemorative poster is a program of the City of Columbia Office of Cultural Affairs, in collaboration with the Columbia Daily Tribune and Deck the Walls, with a sponsorship in 2014 from Commerce Bank.
