Public Health & Human Services Now Offering Flu Vaccine

COLUMBIA, MO (September 26, 2014) - The Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services now has flu vaccine available for anyone age six months or older. Flu vaccine is available Monday – Friday from 8 am – 4:30 p.m. at our clinic, located at 1005 West Worley.  No appointment is needed; walk-ins are welcome.

This year, thanks to generous support from MU Children’s Hospital and the David B. Lichtenstein Foundation, we can provide free seasonal flu vaccine (injectable and FluMist®) to all children age six months through 18 years of age. Funding and support from the previously community organizations will also allow public health nurses to conduct flu clinics in participating Boone County elementary, middle, and high schools this fall. Parents who have questions about their school’s participation should contact their school nurse.

For adults ages 19 and older, cost of the injectable vaccine and the FluMist® is $25. FluMist® can be given to healthy non-pregnant people through age 49. We have the ability to bill a wide variety of insurances. Our clinic also accepts cash, check and debit/credit cards. Receipts can be given upon request. For more information on the insurance providers accepted through the VaxCare billing system, please visit http://www.gocolumbiamo.com/Health/Clinic_and_Nursing/MissouriInsuranceList.php

According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS), more than 1,500 Missourians died from the flu and/or pneumonia during the 2013-14 flu season. “Getting a flu vaccine every year is your best protection against the flu,” Public Health and Human Services Director, Stephanie Browning, said. “We encourage anyone over the age of six months to be vaccinated, especially if you have chronic medical conditions, are over the age of 65, or will spend time around a newborn during flu season. “

Over a 31-yaer period, flu-associated deaths nationwide have ranged from about 3,000 to 49,000 each year. For more information on the flu, please visit www.cdc.gov/flu.
