*Cruise the Creeks Bicycle Ride Series Starts Saturday*
*COLUMBIA, MO (April 9, 2015)* – GetAbout Columbia, in partnership with the
Public Works Stormwater Utility Education Program, will host a free Cruise
the Creeks Bicycle Ride Series starting on Saturday, April 11 at 2:00 p.m.
The first of three guided will begin with a themed ride called “Cyclists,
Know Your Shed.” Cyclists should meet at the MLK Jr. Memorial Garden at
Battle Garden/MKT Trail Stadium Trailhead, 800 W. Stadium Blvd. Cyclists
will enjoy a 7-mile, educational ride along the MKT trail highlighting the
City of Columbia’s efforts to improve water quality in the Flat
Branch/Hinkson Creek watersheds. Educational stops along the way will
include the 3M Flat Branch/Hinkson Wetlands and the Forum Nature Area Level
Spreader.
The bike tour and watershed discussion will be led by Michael Heimos,
Stormwater Utility Educator and community volunteers. Stormwater
retrofits, such as rain gardens, bioretention cells and detention basins
remove pollutants from the "first flush" rainfall and encourage stormwater
to infiltrate into the ground instead of running off into local creeks and
streams. GetAbout Columbia staff will provide pre-ride and trailside
assistance for minor bike repair needs.
Future rides in the Cruise the Creeks series include: Bikes and Birds,
Saturday, May 2, and Bikes and Trees; Bringing Green Interests Together,
Saturday, June 6.
For additional information or to register, call the Columbia Parks and
Recreation Department at 874-7460. Drop-in participants are welcome. Call
the Parks and Recreation Hotline at 874-7663 ext. 4 for weather related
cancellations.
