USS Columbia submarine commander will visit Columbia, namesake city, April 18-19

COLUMBIA, MO (April 16, 2015) - Mayor Bob McDavid will welcome Cmdr. John Patrick Friedman and Lt. Jason Ulbrich from the Pearl Harbor-based USS Columbia (SSN771) Los Angeles class nuclear submarine during an informal reception from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at Shiloh Bar & Grill on Saturday, April 18. The reception is open to the public.

During the USS Columbia namesake city visit, the crew will attend a Veterans of Foreign Wars breakfast with World War II submariners, the MU football Black and Gold Spring Game on Saturday and the MU vs. Alabama baseball game on Sunday. They will tour the Columbia Fire Department, visit with MU NROTC students and have dinner with committee members.

The USS Columbia was christened in September 1994 by former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, who was the boat’s sponsor. 2015 marks the 20th anniversary of the boat’s commissioning, which took place Oct. 9, 1995. The boat has namesake cities in Missouri, Illinois and South Carolina. Columbia, Mo., and the USS Columbia is one of the Navy’s longest, continuously-active namesake city programs.

USS Columbia ties include the University of Missouri, Columbia College and local businesses and organizations. During an early visit to Columbia’s Flat Branch Pub & Brewing, crew members enjoyed their visit so much that they named their crew dining area Flat Branch Café. The dining area features a Flat Branch logo, modified for them by owner Tom Smith, and Mizzou banners and posters. The crew entertainment system, a gift from all three namesake Columbias (Missouri, Illinois and South Carolina) was custom-designed for the submarine by D&M Sound.
