Councilman Skala advances in national cities leadership group

COLUMBIA, MO (April 20, 2015) - Third Ward Councilman Karl Skala was recognized by the National League of Cities (NLC) in March for reaching the Platinum level in its Certificate of Achievement Leadership program. Councilman Skala was one of 17 who were recognized for this achievement. Nationwide, fewer than 500 city officials have attained the Platinum level.

The Platinum Certificate level is achieved by local city officials when they earn 67 credits in core competency areas:

*Personal leadership, growth and development;

*Leading effective governance;

*Effective communication and media relations;

*Building communities through inspiration and empowerment; and

*Leading innovation and managing change.

The Platinum Certificate level also requires a national leadership role either with the NLC or with another national organization or association. Councilman Skala’s record includes national service on the NLC’s City Futures Panel on Democratic Governance; University Communities Council Steering Committee; Leadership Training Council; and on panels for the NLC and Smart Growth America.

NLC is the nation’s oldest and largest organization devoted to strengthening and promoting cities as centers of opportunity, leadership and governance. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages.
