Fire damages North Columbia Mobile Home

COLUMBIA, MO (April 27, 2015) - At 8:27 p.m. on Monday, April 27, 2015 the Columbia Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire at 3406 Range Line Street, the Rustic Meadows Trailer Court in north Columbia. The 9-1-1 caller reported a fire in the kitchen of the residence.

Columbia firefighters arrived at Lot 35 four minutes later to find flames and smoke coming from the north end of a single-wide mobile home. Firefighters quickly entered the home, extinguished the fire, and searched the residence for any possible victims. Firefighters found no victims and learned that the only occupant of the trailer, a 66-year-old female, had safely exited the mobile home prior to the fire department’s arrival. The occupant stated that, after discovering the fire, she went to a neighbor’s home and asked them to call 9-1-1.

Firefighters remained on the scene for approximately ninety minutes overhauling the fire damage and ventilating smoke from the home.  Columbia Assistant Fire Marshal Kyle Edwards is working to determine the origin and cause of the fire but has not yet completed his investigation.  The north end of the mobile home sustained extensive fire damage and the remainder of the home sustained heat and smoke damage. Edwards estimated the damages to be approximately $20,000. There were no injuries. Three fire engines, a ladder truck, and a rescue squad responded to the incident.

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor.
