College Avenue Safety Enhancement Project - Signals to Go Live by Friday, August 21
COLUMBIA, MO (August 17, 2015) - College Avenue Pedestrian Crossing Signals (H.A.W.K. Signals) Go Live This Week
As thousands of MU students begin returning to campus, the College Avenue Safety Enhancement Project will be complete and the new H.A.W.K. (High-intensity Activated crossWalK beacon) signals will become active. It is anticipated the signals will become active on Friday, August 21. We will provide updates as needed with exact times.
Pedestrians will be guided by the design of the new center median between University Avenue and Rollins Street to two new pedestrian crosswalks on College Ave. One just south of Rosemary Ave and the second just north of Wilson Ave.
Pedestrians will push a button to activate the pedestrian crossing signal, which is the familiar red hand (don't walk) or white figure (walk) pictograms and a countdown timer. These signals pedestrians see are identical to all other pedestrian crossing signals in Columbia.
Motorist will see a new type of traffic control.
When the overhead signals are dark, motorist proceed as normal. When the crosswalk button is pushed, it will be begin to sequence the overhead lights. When the light begins to flash yellow, motorist should prepare to stop. The signal then displays a solid yellow light. The signal then cycles to two solid red lights and motorist should be stopped at the white pavement stop bar. It is at this time pedestrians will be in the crosswalk.
Towards the end of the pedestrian crossing cycle, the solid red lights will begin to flash. This means motorist should stop, and if no pedestrian is present, proceed with caution.
When the lights again go dark, motorist may proceed as normal.
