South Columbia Home Heavily Damaged by Fire

COLUMBIA, MO (February 27, 2015) - At 5:47 p.m. Friday, February 27, 2015 the Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported residential structure at 4130 South Lenoir, the Sunset Mobile Home Park in south Columbia. The 9-1-1 caller, one of the home’s occupants, reported a fire in the floorboards of the mobile home.

Columbia Firefighters arrived on the scene at 5:52 p.m. to find smoke and flames coming from beneath the single-wide mobile home. The three adult occupants, and a cat named Cleo, were able to get out of the home without injury.

Firefighters had to remove metal skirting from around the base of the mobile home and peel back some of the exterior walls to extinguish the flames. Crews had the fire under control in approximately 20 minutes. Three fire engines, a ladder truck, and a rescue squad responded to the incident. Crews remained on the scene for more than three hours searching for and extinguishing hidden embers.

The home sustained significant fire, heat, and smoke damage. The occupants will be staying elsewhere with family.  A fire investigator was on the scene at the time of this release. No origin or cause information is available.

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every ten years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor.
