Columbia Public Works - Street Maintenance Operations - Week of July 6-10

COLUMBIA, MO (June 26, 2015) - Columbia Public Works Street Division will perform street maintenance operations, chip sealing, on the following streets, daily from July 6 - 10 between the hours of 7 am and 5 pm, weather permitting.

Motorist and non-motorized transportation users are urged to use caution in the work zones and use alternate routes when available.

Chip seal maintenance involves placing a layer of liquid asphalt on the existing driving surface and then covering the liquid asphalt with a layer of chipped rock. The rock is rolled into the liquid asphalt and the loose rock swept away within several days after application.

This maintenance prolongs the life of the roadway lengthening the time between major and costly roadwork. The cost to perform chip seal maintenance on a roadway is about 1/3 of the cost of using a mill and overlay operation. Mill and overlay involves milling a layer of the driving surface away and then overlaying a new layer of asphalt.
