Hazardous Material Identified
COLUMBIA, MO (March 6, 2015) - The Columbia Fire Department responded to a report of an unknown, possibly hazardous material in the intersection of College Avenue and Walnut on Thursday, March 5, 2015 at 3:37pm.
Crews arrived on the scene and observed a one gallon, plastic, unmarked jug on Walnut just east of College Avenue.
The Columbia Fire Department's Hazardous Materials Team secured the area, retrieved the container and put a neutralizing agent over the unknown liquid that spilled from the container onto the roadway.
The content of the container was later identified as sulphuric acid. Sulphuric acid is an industrial chemical used in the manufacturing process of many goods over a wide range of applications.
The intersection was temporarily closed for approximately forty five minutes.
Eight units from the Columbia Fire Department responded to this event.
