Electric load drops during Earth Hour

COLUMBIA, MO (March 30, 2015) - The Columbia electric load dropped by 2.0 megawatts during Earth Hour on March 28 from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. This represents around 1% of the electric load. Calculations were based on data collected from individual transformers at the city’s substations. There was evidence of participation in most areas of the city with the greatest reductions showing in the western section of Columbia

The goal of Earth Hour is for people to show their support for protecting the planet by creating a symbolic wave of darkness. During this hour participants turn off lights and non-essential electronics simultaneously around the world. If someone missed participating in Earth Hour, there's still time to save energy. Columbia is competing for the Georgetown University Energy Prize during 2015 and 2016. The Prize is a $5 million reward to one of 50 competing cities who can reduce the most energy.
