Public invited to remember Columbias Sharp End
COLUMBIA, MO (May 15, 2015) - Located between 5th and 6th streets on Walnut, Sharp End was a self-sufficient, nationally-known area where thriving black-owned businesses operated for more than 50 years. To many black Columbia residents and visitors, Sharp End was the cultural, entertainment and business center of black life during its era.
Urban renewal in the 1960s represented a defining moment in the history of Columbia in terms of the loss of black business momentum and cultural heritage. The buildings associated with Sharp End disappeared, but the memory still is alive.
The Sharp End Heritage Committee invites the public to celebrate and honor the families that made the area the cultural heart of Columbiaâs black community.
*Ribbon-cutting and dedication of a historical marker on Walnut Street, north side of the 5th and Walnut parking garage. The program includes committee and Sharp End family members and state and local elected officials.
The program will run from 5:30-6:15 p.m., and Walnut between 5th and 6th streets will be temporarily closed to traffic between 4-8 p.m. Access to the post office parking lot will remain open.
*Public reception at City Hall, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. This event features light refreshments and a display honoring Sharp Endâs history.Â
