UPDATE: Emergency Lane Restrictions on Walnut West of Providence Rd
COLUMBIA, MO (November 4, 2015) - UPDATE: Two 30-inch diameter storm water drain pipes on on Walnut Street deteriorated to a point where the road started to collapse on Friday, October 30. This resulted in the closure of the east bound lane of Walnut, west of Providence.
Materials to replace the storm drain pipes have arrived and cutting the pavement to remove the old pipe started today. On Thursday, November 5, excavation and replacement of the failed pipes will begin. Approximately 80 feet of two parallel 30 inch diameter storm drain pipes will be replaced with two 24 inch HDPE pipe. The Street Division will replace the pavement once the pipe replacement is complete. The project is expected to be completed by the end of next week, weather permitting.
Motorists and bicyclists will be able to use the left turn lane for left turns, through movements and right turns until repairs are complete.
Original Press Release: Friday, October 30, 2015
The Stormwater Utility is investigating a potential collapse of an underground stormwater pipe on East Walnut St between Providence Rd and 2nd Street.
A cavity in the westbound lanes will be covered by steel plates and require lane restrictions until further notice. The left turn lane is closed for eastbound traffic on East Walnut to turn north onto Providence Rd. The turn lane will be used for westbound traffic on Walnut.
The stormwater utility will continue to investigate the extent of the issue and it is likely excavation and repairs will begin on Monday, November 2. Additional information will be released as more information is known.
Until repairs are made, motorist and non-motorized transportation users should use caution in the barricaded area and find alternate routes when available.
