City of Columbia designated as Purple Heart City
COLUMBIA, MO (November 5, 2015) - On the evening of Monday, Nov. 9, the City of Columbia will hold a ceremony honoring Purple Heart recipients and celebrating the new title of Purple Heart City. In September, the City received an invitation from the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) to become a Purple Heart City.
Monday’s ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 701 East Broadway. The Boy Scouts will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Purple Heart recipients that live in Columbia will receive acknowledgement and there will be a moment of silence for the deceased recipients. Mayor Bob McDavid will give remarks and read a proclamation to declare the community a Purple Heart City. A plaque will be presented to the City by John Dismer, Commander MOPH Department of Missouri.
There are over 1,100 cities, counties, states, schools, universities, businesses and others across the nation that have the Purple Heart title. Missouri was named as a Purple Heart State on April 17, 2013. There are 37 counties and 107 cities in Missouri that have received the Purple Heart designation. I-44 and I-70 have been named as Purple Heart Trails; the organization is working on getting the recognition for other major roadways around the state. The Kansas City Royals and the St. Louis Cardinals are designated as Purple Heart Professional Baseball Teams.
Through Congress, the Military Order of the Purple Heart was created in 1958 and is composed of military men and women who were given Purple Heart Medals for wounds they received in combat. Missouri Chapters of MOPH are located in Columbia, Fenton, Forsyth, Ft. Leonard Wood, Joplin, Kansas City and Springfield.
