Fire Damages structure in west Columbia **UPDATE**

COLUMBIA, MO (November 17, 2015) - At 5:51 a.m. Tuesday, November 17, 2015, the Columbia Fire Department responded to a report of smoke in a residential structure, at 4807 Samantha Court, after the occupants heard a lightning strike.  

Columbia Firefighters arrived at 5:57 a.m. to find no flames visible from the exterior of the structure; however, there was a smoke haze inside the home.  While investigating the source of the smoke, firefighters found fire in the attic. 

The fire breached the roof and there is extensive damage to the structure.  Deputy Fire Marshal Tim Bach estimates the damage to be around $100,000.
Bach stated the cause is still under investigation; but it appears to be from the lightning strike.
The two occupants and dog that were home at the time of the fire had no injuries.

Three engines, a ladder, and a rescue squad responded to the incident.  

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor.
