PUBLIC HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES NOW OFFERING INJECTABLE FLU VACCINE

COLUMBIA, MO (September 28, 2015) - (COLUMBIA, MO) – The Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services now has flu vaccine available for anyone age six months or older. Injectable flu vaccine is available Monday – Friday from 8 am – 4:30 p.m. at our clinic, located at 1005 West Worley.  No appointment is needed; walk-ins are welcome. The FluMist® vaccine will be available at a later date.

This year, thanks to generous support from MU Children’s Hospital and the David B. Lichtenstein Foundation, we can provide free seasonal flu vaccine (injectable and FluMist® when available) to all children age six months through 18 years of age. Funding and support from these community organizations will also allow public health nurses to conduct flu clinics in participating Boone County elementary, middle, and high schools this fall. Parents who have questions about their school’s participation should contact their school nurse.

For adults ages 19 and older, cost of the injectable vaccine $25. We have the ability to bill a wide variety of insurances. Our clinic also accepts cash, check and debit/credit cards. Receipts can be given upon request. For more information on the insurance providers accepted through the VaxCare billing system, please visit http://www.gocolumbiamo.com/Health/Clinic_and_Nursing/MissouriInsuranceList.php

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the flu vaccine prevented approximately 7.2 million flu-associated illnesses and 90,000 hospitalizations in the 2013-14 flu season.  “Getting a flu vaccine every year is your best protection against the flu,” Public Health and Human Services Director, Stephanie Browning, said. “We encourage anyone over the age of six months to be vaccinated, especially if you have chronic medical conditions, are over the age of 65, or will spend time around a newborn during flu season. “

Regarding the drift of the 2014-15 flu vaccine, Browning and other health officials explain that they are optimistic that this season’s flu vaccine will provide good protection against circulating flu viruses. For more information on the flu, please visit www.cdc.gov/flu.
