Solid Waste Collection Days Changing for Selected Areas of Columbia

COLUMBIA, MO (April 6, 2016) - In October of 2015, the Solid Waste Utility identified several unbalanced routes which are affecting the safety and efficiency of collecting residential curbside refuse and recycling. Unbalanced routes means that a larger or smaller than average number of customers are being served on a particular collection day. This imbalance is a result of continued growth throughout our city. Routes have previously required rebalancing, the last time was in 2009

Out of respect for the Initiative Petition regarding automated collection and the March vote, the Utility had postponed any changes to residential collection days. However, the Utility must move forward with these changes for the safety of our collection employees and to address efficiency issues for our customers.

Changes involve moving about 2,000 Wednesday collections to Tuesday and about 1,700 Thursday collections to Wednesday. It is important to note, not all Wednesday and Thursday residents will be affected. Only those residents who receive a letter or door hanger are affected by the change in collection days. The changes will occur the week of April 25. Other than a change in the collection day, residents will experience no other service changes.

Each resident affected will receive a letter sent via US Mail this week and in the coming weeks a door hanger will be hung at each affected residence. The City View map on the website at GoColumbiaMo.com will be updated to reflect the changes in collection days.
