USS Columbia Commander and crew to present plaque to MU Athletics
COLUMBIA, MO (April 19, 2016) - On Wednesday April 20th at 11 a.m. in Mizzou Arena, the Commander and crew of the USS Columbia will present a plaque of appreciation to MU Athletic Department Deputy Director, Wren Baker; and Gary Link, Assistant Athletic Director. Representing the crew will be Captain Kevin King, Director, Naval ROTC, Robert Ross, Director, University of Missouri Veterans Center, Chris Kelly, Senior Director, MU Corporate Relations, and Anne Moore, Chair, Mayor’s Task Force on USS Columbia Submarine.
Based in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, USS Columbia crewmembers have visited Columbia often and have established strong ties to our educational institutions. They regularly visit the MU campus to continue their relationship with the Office of the Chancellor, the NROTC program, the College of Engineering and MU Veteran’s Center. When the submarine was deployed during football season, the MU Athletic Department and Committee members sent a complete Mizzou Tailgate Party to the crew, including DVDs, posters, and a signed football from then Coach Pinkel which the crew keeps proudly in the Ward Room. The crew decorated their dining hall (named Flat Branch Café after Columbia’s Flat Branch Pub) with Mizzou Posters and banners donated by Mizzou Athletics.
Columbia Missouri has been a Namesake City for the Los Angeles Class submarine USS Columbia SSN771 from its inception. The USS Columbia was commissioned on October 9, 1995. It was built with the state-of-the art SEAWOLF technology. Application of this technology makes this ship the most modern submarine in the world.
