City recognizes International Compost Awareness Week
COLUMBIA, MO (April 29, 2016) - International Compost Awareness Week is May 1-7. The City of Columbia wants to use this week to remind our residents the impact composting can have on residential waste.
Composting is nature’s way of recycling and it is one of many ways citizens can work towards reducing Columbia’s waste line. Compostable items make up 34% of the material that goes into landfills. Residential composting efforts help Columbia increase the lifespan of our municipal landfill.
The City has a compost demonstration site located at Capen Park, 1600 Capen Park Dr., where the public can view different options for composting. Anyone can turn their kitchen scraps and yard waste into a valuable soil amendment. Whether one has a spacious yard or lives in an apartment, there is a composting system to fit everyone’s needs and space.
The City’s Volunteer Program offers compost classes where residents can learn the what, how and whys of composting. The next class will be Tuesday, May 17, 6:00-7:00pm held at the Capen Park compost demonstration site. The registration form and a complete workshop schedule can be found at www.como.gov, search for compost.
