Columbia Disabilities Issues Forums scheduled for Feb. 29
COLUMBIA, MO (February 25, 2016) - Since 1995, several disability-related organizations have hosted Columbia Disabilities Issues Forums to give candidates for a variety of offices the opportunity to present their ideas to the disability community and to answer questions from citizens who are interested in disability related issues. It is generally one of the best attended election forums in Columbia.
The Columbia Disabilities Commission and a coalition of local organizations are hosting another Columbia Disabilities Issues Forum for the upcoming city elections:
Columbia Disabilities Issues Forum
Monday, February 29, 2016
Conference Rooms 1A/1B at City Hall, 701 E. Broadway
11:30 p.m. – 12 p.m. (Roll carts)
12 – 1 p.m. (Mayor and city council candidates)
The first part of the forum will be a discussion on the upcoming roll cart initiative petition, Proposition 1, for the March 15, 2016 election. Representatives from two local advocacy groups, Cheaper.Safer.Greener. and the Solid Waste Advocacy Group (SWAG), who have opposing views on this issue, have been invited to participate in the forum.
The second part of the forum will be a discussion with mayor and city council candidates for the April 5, 2016 election. All candidates have been invited to participate in the forum.
The forum will be a moderated format, each representative or candidate will present an opening statement and the moderator will then pose questions relating to disabilities issues surrounding the community.
Following the Columbia Disabilities Issues Forum, there will be a brief informational seminar on the online reporting system for vehicles illegally parked in spots reserved for people with disabilities. This is expected to be 30 minutes or less.
The coalition of local organizations hosting the forum are the following: ACT, Boone County Family Resources, Central Missouri Subcontracting Enterprises, Columbia Disabilities Commission, Easter Seals Midwest, Friends of BCFR, Great Plains ADA Center, Job Point, MORE Group, People First of Boone County, Services for Independent Living, TIPS for Kids, MoLEND, Woodhaven.
