Fire Damages residence southwest Columbia just after midnight New Year's day **Update**

COLUMBIA, MO (January 4, 2016) - At 12:22 a.m. Friday, January 1, 2015, the Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported residential structure fire at 5621 Abercorn Drive. Several 9-1-1 callers reported flames coming from the residence.

Columbia Firefighters arrived at 12:32 a.m. to find flames visible from the outside rear and roof of the residence. Firefighters had the fire extinguished within 8 minutes. Fire crews rescued a dog from the structure and there were no injuries.


Assistant Fire Marshall Joel Pauley determined the damage estimate at $50,000. The cause was determined to be improperly discarded fireworks.

Two engines, a ladder, and a rescue squad from the Columbia Fire Department and one engine from Boone County fire responded to the incident.

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor.
