Columbia Water & Light wins Inspiring Energy Efficiency award for student educational program
COLUMBIA, MO (January 27, 2016) - Columbia Water & Light has won the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance’s (MEEA) 2016 Inspiring Efficiency Education Award. Bestowed annually, MEEA’s Inspiring Efficiency Education Award is presented to an organization that promotes and increases energy efficient practices in the Midwest through effective education.
Columbia Water & Light has reached more than 4,200 students in the Columbia Public School system through its marketing contest and other educational programs. This award recognizes the utility for its educational marketing program, dedicated to teaching middle school students about energy efficiency and using their creativity to enhance its messaging.
The program gave students the opportunity to put their creativity and understanding of the importance of energy efficiency to the test in four categories: a contest to name the program, and contests to develop a haiku, visual art and a radio advertisement.
“The future of energy efficiency is in the hands of our children,” said Stacey Paradis, executive director of MEEA. “Columbia Water & Light’s program illustrates the value of engaging children in the conversation about how we all can work to improve our energy efficiency.”
Sixth grade student Jackson Huenefeldt designed the winning program name, Columbia Youth Teaching Efficiency (CYTE). The name will be used for future marketing contests.
Winners from each category received $50, honorable mentions received $25 and special recognition prizes were $15. In total, 29 student participants were recognized by Columbia Water & Light for their contributions. “It’s clear from all the entries that students understand the concept of energy efficiency and how to apply it in their lives,” said Connie Kacprowicz, Communications & Marketing Supervisor for Columbia Water & Light. “More than just being fun, these contests demonstrated that people of all ages can do their part to be more energy efficient.”
The award will be presented to Columbia Water & Light during the 2016 Inspiring Efficiency Award ceremony on Feb. 25. The ceremony is part of MEEA’s Midwest Energy Solutions Conference (www.meeaconference.org). The Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (MEEA), the region’s source on energy efficiency. Formed in 2000, MEEA is committed to advancing sound energy efficiency programs, policies and priorities in the Midwest. MEEA’s membership represents a broad consortium of energy stakeholders from across a 13-state area. www.mwalliance.org
