Smoke Testing on Sanitary Sewer Lines in West-central Columbia to begin on June 20

COLUMBIA, MO (June 17, 2016) - City of Columbia Utilities - Sanitary Sewer has contracted with TREKK Design Group to perform smoke testing of sewer lines beginning the week of June 20 and continuing through the end of July. The smoke testing is scheduled to be performed in the Flat Branch and County House Branch Water Basin (map attached).

The smoke testing, conducted by TREKK Design Group LLC, helps to locates sources of inflow and infiltration (I&I) of stormwater and groundwater into the sanitary sewer collection system. When water from other sources enters the sanitary sewer system, the system can become overburdened, which in turn causes sanitary sewer back ups.

The "smoke" that will be used for this project is non-toxic, harmless, has no odor and creates no fire hazard.

Residents in the affected area will be notified via a door hanger (copy attached) on their front door. The door hangers contain important information for residents concerning the testing. Signs in the neighborhood will identify which areas TREKK is conducting the smoke testing on a particular day. Signs will also be posted in the neighborhoods to alert residents and motorists that smoke testing is occurring.

During the testing activities, TREKK personnel will identify defects that are revealed when smoke escapes through them. Locations for defects may include roof downspouts, uncapped cleanouts, driveway drains, stairwell drains, yard or area drains, window well drains, foundation-perimeter drains and defective service pipes.

The information gained from these activities will be used to improve the sanitary sewer services to both the neighborhood and the community. Questions regarding this testing should be directed to Columbia Utilities, Sanitary Sewer Engineering, Nate Runyan, at (573) 441-5482. For more information about the smoke testing and I&I, please reference the attached brochure or visit CoMo.gov (search: I&I).
