City hires new finance director, meet and greet planned for March 7

COLUMBIA, MO (March 2, 2016) - The City of Columbia is pleased to announce the hiring of Michele Nix as the City’s new finance director. Current finance director John Blattel will retire on March 11, Nix’s first day is March 3.

Nix is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and was most recently the chief financial officer of MOSERS - Missouri State Employee's Retirement System. She worked in various positions at MOSERS for over 18 years. A Columbia resident since 1997, Nix said she’s eager to work for the city she lives in.

“The job will be a new challenge and the opportunity is exciting to make a difference in my city,” Nix said.

City Manager Mike Matthes said there were highly qualified candidates that applied and it was a difficult decision, but Nix is the right person for the job.

“She has accomplished so much in her career,” Matthes said.  “We’re lucky and excited to have someone with this much talent to succeed John.”

Additional to working with pensions, Nix has experience in working as an internal auditor for several financial institutions and an external auditor in public accounting.

“The City must continually monitor its pension plans. Michele’s experience at MOSERS will be a very valuable asset to the City in this regard,” Blattel said.

Nix earned her bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Missouri and her master's degree in business administration from William Woods University in Columbia.

“I've loved Columbia ever since I went to the university. I left but then came back and this is where I’ve planted myself,” Nix said. “Things happen for a reason and Columbia is part of that for me.”

Nix is currently the president of the Public Pension Financial Forum and holds memberships in professional organizations including the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Missouri Society of CPA’s, and Association of Government Accountants and Government Finance Officers Association.

A meet and greet is scheduled for Monday, March 7 from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. in conference rooms 1A/1B at City Hall, 701 E. Broadway. All citizens are welcome to attend to enjoy refreshments and meet Nix.

Nix will be sworn in at the City Council meeting on March 7 at 7 p.m. Her starting annual salary is set at $130,000 and includes a benefit package for automobile allowance, cellphone allowance and vacation time.
