New Columbia city prosecutor hired, will begin April 4
COLUMBIA, MO (March 3, 2016) - The City of Columbia is pleased to announce the hiring of John “Jack” McManus as the new city prosecutor. Current City Prosecutor Steve Richey will retire on March 4. Assistant City Prosecutor Robert Rinck will be the acting city prosecutor until McManus begins his role on April 4.
“I look forward to working for the City of Columbia. Steve Richey has done a great job managing the Prosecutor’s office. His work and the high caliber staff make it easy to step into the position,” McManus said.
A Columbia resident, McManus has nearly 30 years of legal experience. Most recently, McManus served as chief counsel of the Agriculture and Environment Division of the Missouri Attorney General’s office, a position he's held since 2009, and has been an associate adjunct professor at the University of Missouri School of Law since 2014. In his previous positions, McManus worked for the Tax and Environmental Enforcement Section of the Ohio Attorney General’s office, the Ohio Supreme Court’s Office of Disciplinary Counsel, and the Special Litigation Unit of the Missouri Attorney General’s office.
“We are thrilled Jack McManus will be joining our team. Jack brings to Columbia a wealth of experience in environmental regulation along with a strong, steady, community-minded approach to enforcement,” City Counselor Nancy Thompson said. “Our day-to-day interaction with Steve will be sorely missed, but I expect the transition in leadership for the citizens of Columbia to be seamless.”
McManus said he’s looking forward to connecting with the community through his new position.
“This position gives me an opportunity to help people who come before the court,” McManus said. “I've always been involved in enforcement, but it’s mostly been problem-solving and not imposing punishment. It’s about figuring out a solution for the future.”
Having worked in Jefferson City for the past ten years, McManus said he’s looking forward to being more involved in groups and organizations in Columbia.
“Columbia has a lot of things that you find in a larger city,” McManus said. “Having the university in the city enriches the environment and makes it a more enjoyable place to live.”
A retirement reception for Richey will be held on Friday, March 4 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in conference rooms 1A/1B at City Hall, 701 E. Broadway.
