Fire Damages residence in west-central Columbia

COLUMBIA, MO (March 21, 2016) - At 1:25 a.m. Monday, March 21, 2016, the Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported residential structure fire at 203 Ruby Lane. The 911 caller reported flames showing.

Columbia Firefighters arrived at 1:29 a.m. to flames visible from the front of the structure. The fire was extinguished within 10 minutes of arrival. 

There was one occupant at home at the time of the fire.  The occupant received mild to moderate burns and was transported by ambulance to the hospital.

There was one pet in the residence which perished during the fire.

The cause of the fire and a dollar damage estimate has not yet been determined.  The fire is currently being investigated.

Three engines, a ladder, and a rescue squad responded to the incident.  Fire units are still on the scene.

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries atleast once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor.
