Airport Disaster Drill Scheduled for today, Thursday, September 8

COLUMBIA, MO (August 29, 2016) - On Thursday September 8, emergency response agencies from across Boone County will be conducting a full-scale exercise from 4:00 PM until 9:00 PM at the Columbia Regional Airport.  This exercise will include Columbia Regional Airport Public Safety Department, the City of Columbia Police and Fire Departments, the Boone County Sheriff Department, Southern Boone County Fire Protection District, the Boone County Fire Protection District, University Healthcare Ambulance Service, Boone Hospital Ambulance Service, Staff for Life Helicopter Service, Boone County Joint Communications (9-1-1) and the Boone County Office of Emergency Management as well as the Missouri National Guard, American Red Cross and Salvation Army.

This exercise will include live action training equipment that simulates an actual aircraft fire.  Citizens in the area may notice smoke coming from the area of the airport and those in the immediate area may see smoke and flames coming from the airport property; in addition, emergency vehicles will be in the area as if this were an actual response.  This training opportunity offers a real life training environment for first responder agencies in Boone County to identify both strengths and weakness in their response protocols.  As with all airport operations, citizens are reminded to remain well away and outside of the fenced perimeter of the airport. Persons not affiliated with the exercise will be permitted to enter the cordoned off area of the airport grounds.

Citizens are reminded not to call 9-1-1 except for actual, real and verified emergencies.

The Columbia Regional Airport and response agencies thank the residents of Boone County for their continued support.

Media wishing to attend the event should report to Building 120 where information and media escorts will be available.
