PUBLIC HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES OFFERING INJECTABLE FLU VACCINE

COLUMBIA, MO (September 16, 2016) - The Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services now has flu vaccine available for anyone age six months or older. Injectable flu vaccine is available Monday – Friday from 8 am – 4:30 p.m. at our clinic, located at 1005 West Worley.  No appointment is needed; walk-ins are welcome. Due to a recommendation from the CDC, the FluMist® nasal spray vaccine will not be offered this season.

This year, thanks to generous support from MU Children’s Hospital and the David B. Lichtenstein Foundation, we can provide free injectable flu vaccine to all children age six months through 18 years of age. Funding and support from these community organizations will also allow public health nurses to conduct flu clinics in participating Boone County elementary, middle, and high schools this fall. Parents who have questions about their school’s participation should contact their school nurse.

For adults ages 19 and older, cost of the vaccine $25. We have the ability to bill a wide variety of insurances. Our clinic also accepts cash, check and debit/credit cards. Receipts can be given upon request. For more information on the insurance providers accepted through the VaxCare billing system, please visit http://www.como.gov/health/clinical-services/clinical-service-fees/missouri-insurance-list/

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the flu vaccine prevented approximately 1.9 million flu-associated illnesses and 67,000 hospitalizations in the 2014-15 flu season.  “Getting a flu vaccine every year is your best protection against the flu,” Public Health and Human Services Director, Stephanie Browning, said. “We encourage anyone over the age of six months to be vaccinated, especially if you have chronic medical conditions, are over the age of 65, or will spend time around a newborn during flu season. “
