City's Historic Preservation Commission Awarded Grant for Hands-On
Educational Workshop

(Columbia, MO) - The Missouri Department of Natural Resources, State
Historic Preservation, Office has awarded a $12,200 grant to the City's
Historic Preservation Commission to hire a consultant to produce a
three-day intensive and hands-on educational workshop on historic
preservation. The state will fund $7,320 of the project costs.

Historic Preservation Commissioner Douglas Jones, who worked with City
staff to write the grant, stated: "The Columbia Historic Preservation
Commission is excited for the opportunity to bring training to our
community that will help owners of older and historic properties understand
how to care for their homes and buildings. Our goal is to help people see
how practical it is to maintain older structures. This type of maintenance
not only promotes sustainability, but can also help improve energy
efficiency, and is a cost-effective alternative to replacement. We want
owners of older homes and buildings to know that maintaining their property
doesn't have to be intimidating if you know a few simple skills. The goal
of the workshops will be to equip people with these skills."

The target completion date for this project is fall 2014. The workshops
will be open to the public on a first-come, first serve basis and dates
will be announced in the summer. For more information, please contact the
City of Columbia's Community Development Department at 573.874.7239 or
