March of Dimes awards grant to Columbia/Boone County Health Department

(COLUMBIA, MO) - The March of Dimes (MOD) Greater Missouri
Chapter has awarded a grant to the Columbia/Boone County Health
Department (CBCHD) to support the Latino Home Visiting Expansion Program
aimed at underserved maternal and child health needs in Boone County.
The program will expand and improve on the work of "Puertas A
La Salud", the original Latino home visiting program, funded by the
Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, now in its fourth
year. The goal of the program is to enhance prenatal risk assessment,
pregnancy case management and health education services for Latino
families with limited English proficiency. This grant is one of many
that the MOD awards in pursuit of its mission to prevent birth defects
and infant mortality.
"We (CBCHD) will use the grant to expand our home visiting
services to more pregnant Hispanic families, said Sharon Lee, nurse
practitioner and coordinator of the program. "We are grateful to
those volunteers who support the March of Dimes by participation in
events like WalkAmerica and who donate in other ways because they make
these types of grants possible."
The CBCHD provides a wide variety of population-based health
prevention and promotion services for all of Boone County.
The MOD is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is
to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and infant
mortality. Founded in 1938, the organization funds programs in the areas
of research, community service, education, and advocacy to save babies.
Most recently in 2003, the MOD launched a five-year campaign to address
the increasing rate of premature birth. For more information, visit the
MOD Web site at www.marchordimes.com or in Spanish at www.nacersano.org.
For more information on the annual WalkAmerica fund-raiser, visit the
Web site at www.walkamerica.org.
