Bike, Walk & Wheel Week is fast approaching
(COLUMBIA, MO) - It's that time of year again-the 3rd Annual
Mayor's Challenge: Bike, Walk & Wheel Week (BWWW) is coming up May
9-16. Last year's event was a big success with almost 1,000
participants - a 25 percent increase over the first year. Bike, Walk &
Wheel Week is an opportunity to:
encourage community members to walk, bicycle or wheel themselves
to and from their destinations,
increase awareness of the importance of regular physical
activity,
increase awareness of the importance of improved pedestrian
safety,
promote healthy and walkable communities, and to
mobilize communities to work together to create safe
routes. The planning committee would like to encourage everyone
to make a special effort to bike, walk or wheel to their destinations
throughout the week of May 9-16 and make this year's event even more
successful than the previous two years. Specific
events for the week are:
Sunday, May 9, 1 p.m. - Kickoff and Cycle-Recycle at the ARC
Register for BWWW and to receive a free, secondhand bike. At
2:45 p.m. a community bike ride will be held in the area.
Tuesday, May 11, 5:30 p.m - Mayor's Council on Physical
Fitness and Health Fitness Forum at the ARC
Wednesday, May 12, Noon - Women's Intersport Network Luncheon
at the Pasta Factory, reservations required
Friday, May 14, 7 a.m. - Bike, Walk & Wheel Day
Join us at one of many breakfast stations throughout Columbia as
you bike, walk or wheel to your destinations.
Saturday, May 15, 9 a.m. - MKT Trail Ride/Hike beginning at Flat
Branch Park
Participants are invited to hike/bike as far or as fast as their
ability allows.
Sunday, May 16, 2 p.m. - Final Event Rally
Join us in closing Bike, Walk & Wheel Week at Twin Lakes
Shelter. Enjoy the music of the Ironweed Bluegrass Band. Many great
prizes will be given away but you must be present to win.
Finally, don't forget-during this week only, "Your Bike is
Your Ticket!" Individuals can utilize the bike racks on Columbia
Transit buses (space available only, you cannot take your bike on the
bus) and ride for free to any destination on the city bus routes.
