City's commemorative poster receives national award
(COLUMBIA, MO) - The city's 2003 commemorative poster,
produced for last year's Columbia Festival of the Arts, was selected
to receive an honorable mention award from Sunshine Artist magazine.
The poster features a reproduction of a rendering in powdered pigments
and chalk pastel by local artist Mark Langeneckert, and was produced by
the Office of Cultural Affairs. Winning entries, including the city's,
are published in the May 2004 issue of Sunshine Artist.
Sunshine Artist is a nationally distributed magazine that is a
guide to festivals and events. It includes reviews of approximately
2,000 events each month. Every year, the magazine singles out festivals
that develop original art posters by inviting those with a collectible
poster to submit an entry in its contest. Overall design, artwork and
typography are considered in the judging process. This year's judge,
Paul A. Wenzel, is public art coordinator for the city of Orlando and an
adjunct professor of drawing and design at Stetson University.
Visual art is featured on the city's commemorative poster each
year. As the central visual image of the Columbia Festival of the Arts,
the poster communicates the vitality of the event as well as the beauty
of mid Missouri and/or the significance of the arts. Entries for the
2004 commemorative poster are currently being accepted by the Office of
Cultural Affairs. Artists must be Missouri residents and must submit an
application postmarked by May 1. Call (573) 874-6386 or e-mail
festival at GoColumbiaMo.com for an application form.
The Logic/Feeling commemorative poster can be purchased at Deck
the Walls in the Columbia Mall or at the city's Office of Cultural
Affairs, 13 N. 8th Street. Commemorative posters from 1992 to 2002 are
also available for sale at both locations.
The Columbia Festival of the Arts and the commemorative poster
are programs of the city's Office of Cultural Affairs. Financial
assistance for both projects has been provided by the Missouri Arts
Council, a state agency. The 2003 Commemorative Poster was sponsored by
Deck the Walls and the Columbia Daily Tribune.
